The Providence College field hockey team was picked to finish fourth in the 2010 BIG EAST Conference Preseason Coaches’ Poll, released on Friday, August 13. Senior midfielder Jaime Lipski (Dallas, Pa.) was one of 13 players selected to the All-BIG EAST Preseason Team.
Connecticut topped the BIG EAST Preseason Poll with 33 points and four first-place votes. Syracuse was picked second with 32 points and two first-place votes. Louisville, who captured the remaining first-place vote, was chosen to finish third and accumulated 28 points. Providence rounds out the top-four with 18 points, followed by Villanova (17 points), Rutgers (13 points) and Georgetown (6 points).
The Friars finished the 2009 season with a 10-10 record (3-3 BIG EAST) and were ranked as high as 19th in the NFHCA Division I National Coaches’ Poll. Providence was ranked in the national poll in three of the 11 weeks it was released. The Friars received votes in the poll during the eight weeks the program was unranked. Providence ranked 23rd in the final RPI standings released by the NCAA. Only three other BIG EAST field hockey schools placed higher (Syracuse 5, Connecticut 8 and Louisville 18).
Providence returns 16 letterwinners, including five starters from last year’s team. The Friars will compliment the returning players with seven newcomers.
