Michael Waltrip had a dismal 1999 season (and an even more dismal 2000 season) with Mattei Motorsports #7 Philips Electronics Chevy. Waltrip had a lot of crashes, mechanical problems, and bad handling problems that year. However, every now and then, the car showed some performance.
In the 1999 Winston 500, he had a very fast car. He was in the top 5 most of the race. He would shuffle out of the lead pack but then he would get back up there in no time.
With 38 laps to go, he passed Dale Earnhardt for the lead. Of course, in Talladega you can shuffle in and out of the lead at a drop of a pin. However, Michael had a car capable of winning this race. Unfortunately, his engine broke with about 34 laps to go which ended his day. Michael would eventually get that first points-paying win in the 2001 Daytona 500.
