The spotlight of Georgia high school football is shining on a crucial GHSA regular-season clash tonight, as the LaFayette High School Ramblers (1-1) travel to Sonoraville High School to take on the Phoenix (1-2). The game will be broadcast live on Georgia 93-7 and AM 1590 from Calhoun, Georgia.
Ranked 6th in their region, LaFayette is coming off a bye week that was preceded by a bruising 28-0 defeat at the hands of the top-ranked Trion Bulldogs. Despite the loss, the Ramblers have shown promise, particularly with the late-season switch last year to quarterback Dawson Pendergrass, described as the team’s “most complete athlete.”

The question of how potent the Ramblers’ offense can be remains, especially after the Trion loss. Pendergrass’ 97-yard passing game in Week 1 dazzled, but he faces a crucial test tonight. The running game seems to be in good hands, though, with tailback Khalas Finley, who boasts 284 rush yards so far this season, and Jude Godfrey, who already has two touchdowns.
Sonoraville, still reeling from a 50-14 drubbing by Dalton High School, is looking for a momentum shift. Quarterback Jaxon Pate, sacked four times in the first half against Dalton, will need to prove he can withstand the Ramblers’ rush. On the ground, Braxton McMahan remains a bright spot for the Phoenix with 111 rushing yards in the last game.
Dalton capitalized on three first-half turnovers from Sonoraville to build a commanding lead. Tonight’s game presents the Phoenix with a chance to rebound both mentally and tactically.

Dawson Pendergrass and Blaze Stone have already racked up two interceptions each for LaFayette this season. They’ll be eyeing the shaky hands of Sonoraville’s offense. Sonoraville will have to find an answer for LaFayette’s Finley, who’s averaging 142 yards per game. With both teams coming off disparate performances, the first quarter could set the psychological tone for the rest of the match.
LaFayette has exceeded computer projections, scoring seven points more offensively than anticipated and allowing fewer points on defense. Sonoraville, on the other hand, needs to shake off the cloud of its last defeat and regroup.
Tonight’s clash promises to be a decisive one for both teams. With each looking to either maintain momentum or make a significant course correction, the stakes couldn’t be higher.
