The Chattanooga Mocs men’s basketball team earned a No. 13 seed in the 2022 NCAA Tournament and will face No. 4 Illinois of the Big Ten in the First Round on Friday inside PPG Paints Arena. Tip-off is set for 6:50 p.m. ET on TNT. Chattanooga finished the regular season 27-7 overall and claimed the Southern Conference regular season and tournament titles. Illinois, the 16th ranked team in the latest AP Top 25, finished the year 22-9 and fell to Indiana 65-63 in the Big Ten quarterfinals.
The Mocs are making its first appearance in the NCAA Tournament since 2016 and 12th time overall as a program. In its 1997 run to the Sweet 16, Chattanooga also drew Illinois which resulted in a 75-63 win in the Round of 32.
Graduate guard David Jean-Baptiste buried a highly-contested 30-foot jump shot to lift the Chattanooga Mocs men’s basketball team to the 2022 Southern Conference title and a spot in the NCAA Tournament, downing No. 2 Furman 64-63 in overtime on Monday evening inside Harrah’s Cherokee Center.
The Scenic City and college basketball watchers across the country went into a frenzy. The highlight and moment peaked as the No. 1 trending topic on social media waves in the US, and has led to UTC receiving extra attention and interest as they prepare to take on Illinois.
