ALL kids need to learn about neurodiversity, as early in their lives as possible. We all have different brains that are wired differently to sense, learn, think, communicate, and do things differently. There is no “one” correct or normal type of brain. The earlier kids learn this, the better chance we have at creating peer communities where differences are celebrated AND we stop the cycle of perpetuating the disability that comes to differently wired people just from living in a world that doesn’t understand or accommodate their brains.
As a parent, I started talking about neurodiversity with my child before the age of 3. It’s just an everyday topic. It’s not been hard at ALL to teach preschoolers (my child, his friends, my patients) of all neurotypes how to learn from and accommodate one another’s brains. THIS is the future of a truly inclusive society — kids who grow up never knowing anything different. (Please do your part…)
