The coronavirus, called COVID-19 by the World Health Organization, originated in China and has been referred to as the “cousin” of the SARS virus.

Coronaviruses are a large group of viruses that are common among animals. The viruses when found in humans typically result in an upper respiratory tract illness.

Financial markets have plunged worldwide as businesses have closed throughout the United Kingdom and the United States. The World Health Organization has declared the situation a global pandemic.

New flu viruses haven’t been the only causes of pandemics. There was the Sixth Cholera Pandemic of 1910-1911 that killed over 800,000 people. The Black Death pandemic that spanned from 1346 to 1353. In this case, Bubonic Plague claimed the lives of between 75 and 200 million people. The culprits spreading this plague were fleas living on rats.
