Liberty surprised everyone last year by going 10-1 including two wins over Power 5 opponents and a thrilling victory over Coastal Carolina in their bowl game. The major question now is, what do Hugh Freeze and the Flames have for an encore in 2021? The Flames very well could do better in 2021 and contend for a New Years Six Bowl Game. The Flames return 20 starters, and it all starts with their electric, dual threat QB in Malik Willis. Willis led all FBS QBs in rushing last year with 944 rushing yards and 34 total TDs. He led an offense that ranked ninth nationally in rushing (252.4 RYPG) and averaged 38.2 PPG and now returns star RB Joshua Mack and leading WR DJ Stubbs. It may not have seemed possible, but Liberty’s offense can be even better in 2021 than it was in 2020. The same can be said for their defense. The Flames allowed just 20.5 PPG and ranked 11th nationally in total defense (317.7 YPG). Javon Scruggs returns as the team’s leading tackler and Durrell Johnson returns as the team’s sack leader (8 sacks in 2020). Liberty is loaded in all three areas defensively and it will be very difficult for any team to move the ball on them. The schedule lines up very favorably until the end. Liberty’s season will be made in their final three games against Ole Miss, Louisiana, and Army. Another 10 win season may not be in the cards, but another solid bowl game definitely is as Hugh Freeze continues to impress in Lynchburg.
