Vietnam was first introduced to football by the French in the 19th century. When Vietnam was split into North and South in 1954, two national teams existed and both were controlled by separate governing bodies. After the two countries were unified in 1976, the separate governing bodies were combined and was renamed to the Vietnam Football Federation.

Vietnamese supporters are dubbed to be some of the best and most passionate fans, renowned for large celebrations over the team’s achievements, regardless if it is a senior or youth side.
Being considered as one of the most successful football teams in Southeast Asia along with Thailand, Vietnam has won the AFF Championship twice, in 2008 and 2018. At the continental level, the team achieved fourth place twice as South Vietnam in the AFC Asian Cup, albeit when it was only contested by 4 teams. They reached the quarter-finals twice as a united nation in 2007 and 2019. Vietnam’s footballing rivals are other powerful ones in the region including Thailand, Indonesia, Malaysia and Singapore, of which Thailand is seen as its biggest rival.
