TJ Guy Highlight Analysis || Michigan Football Freshman Feature ’21 || Episode 20

High School Sports

What should the Michigan Wolverines do with a guy who’s 6’4, 240 pounds, and has skillsets ranging from linebacker to defensive line? The recruit for this episode I’m describing above is TJ Guy, and the answer to that question is probably “patience”. Ranked just within the top 1000 recruits in the 2021 class, it’s going to take some time for Guy to realize his true potential, as he’s a bit raw in his technique. Add in the context that he plays in the second-highest division in Massachusetts and has only been playing football since 9th grade, it makes sense that he still has some development to go through.

The skills are there and tantalizing, but there remains a big question of where he will actually play. 247Sports has him as an EDGE prospect, while both Rivals and ESPN list him as a DE or SDE. His comparison for me was Chris Wormley, who was a very large DE-shaped athlete out of high school that many felt would outgrow the position entirely. With TJ Guy, his highest potential, for me, is as a large strongside end with the ability to move inside in a 5-technique or even a 3-technique. He’s not going to be nose-tackle shaped, but the versatility he could bring on the interior defensive line is tantalizing.
