South Point Cliff Jumping in 2021 off of the Big Island of Hawaii, is pretty much the most radical thing we did on the island (other than summiting Mauna Kea from the visitors center). From the South Point cliff jumping spot, you can also find the road to the Green Sand Beach!
The South Point Cliff Jump is approx. 14 meters or around 45 feet in height. You may think that isn’t very high but when you’re standing at the top and contemplating the jump, you may reconsider.
We originally showed up to jump early in the day. The weather didn’t look too promising, so we shifted our sights to hiking out to the Green Sand beach first instead. Green sand beach gets its color from a volcanic mineral known as Olivine and can be seen shimmering in the sun light. The hike is a cool 2.6-3 miles, depending on your path. There isn’t a clear direction across the large open area other than some mudding runs, made by off road vehicles from over the years. However, we didn’t have any trouble navigating our way to the beach. We strongly suggest this hike if… you have plenty of water and sunscreen.
Cliff jumping is known to be an extreme sport and can be dangerous. As a word of caution: Only try the jump when the ocean says it’s okay. If it is at all questionable, there is a strong chance that some locals will be out fishing off of the cliff ands you can ask them for advice. We were definitely intimidated by this jump and can honestly say that we will never forget it.
