He slipped a pass into Erik López who ripped a left-footed shot that took a slight deflection, but Sean Johnson made a diving save to keep the match scoreless.
NYCFC took the lead in the 69th minute. Keaton Parks gathered an errant pass in the midfield and quickly found Valentín Castellanos running towards goal. Castellanos then played Ismael Tajouri-Shradi into the box, who was able to sneak a low shot past Guzan.
Atlanta made three second-half substitutions as it continued to search for an equalizing goal, bringing on Cubo Torres, Mo Adams and Jurgen Damm.
