About the band:
Joe Gonzales from Von Ormy, Texas has been playing music since the age of 7. He’s played mariachi with his uncle and he’s also played guitar.
As the years went by, he began listening to conjunto and he loved it. Ruben Naranjo, el mero “Si Senor,” was his favorite and Joe’s idol. His dream was to meet Ruben, to play music with him, and also to learn his style of music. His dream finally came true when, in 1998 he began playing bass with Ruben and became a “Gambler.” He was very happy to play with Ruben, and he also had the privilege of knowing him as a friend.
After Ruben’s passing, he started Joe Gonzales Y Su Conjunto in dedication to his idol. He played for a little over two years when he got a phone call from Ricky Naranjo, Ruben’s son. Knowing that Joe played Ruben’s music, he asked him for help in continuing his father’s legacy. Joe enjoyed playing accordion and singing. For a little over two years he was a “Gambler” again. After helping Ruben Naranjo 3rd to learn his grandfather’s music, Joe went on his own doing what he loved, playing music.
Joe feels very lucky to have have had a chance to perform with conjunto greats such as Gilberto Perez, Tony de la Rosa, and Chano Cadena, just to name a few.
On July 18, 2004 in Harlingen, Texas, Joe Gonzales Y Su Conjunto performed at the STCA awards. With honor he received the “Narciso Martinez Award” for “Vocalist Of The Year,” and he thanks the STCA for the honor.
“El Gambler” has had very many up’s and down’s (as many conjuntos have had), but luckily he has been able to overcome all his hard times, and is happy to continue something he began over 10 years ago.
Joe is very thankful for all the fans and support that they have given him over the years. He’s also very thankful for the musicians who are the backbone of the band for sticking with him, without them there would be no Joe Gonzales Y Su Conjunto.
