When an injured player ceases to play and even to the point of return, there can be additional bruises to overcome. Bruises that are not seen. Depression, denial, and anger can be examples of emotions that need tending. During the down time, there can be time to focus on the “what-ifs” leading to comparing with other players. Players, that still get the opportunity to play.
It is said, that it is important to have an identity outside of sports, especially for such an occasion. This will allow the athlete to know who they are when they are not playing.
An injured player should have resources of people who are aware and help to combat these emotions. People such as educators that can teach how to keep positive and how to deal with emotions and mindfulness. If necessary, a counselor may be needed. Of course, the team physician can assist with how to keep moving. The player on the sidelines, can keep learning by watching.
