Black 5 44871 & 35028 Clan Line | The Cheshireman and Belmond British Pullman – 20.11.21

High School Sports

Two steam hauled trips would both leave London termini on a cold Saturday morning, seeing the return of Black 5 44871 to the south of England, and 35028 Clan Line on her Belmond duties.

We begin with the Black 5 which was hauling “The Cheshireman”, organised by the Railway Touring Company, from London Euston to Chester via the WCML, a fitting engine for the route! Just after sunrise, the 5 is seen powering through Berkhamsted. A 15 minute stop at Milton Keynes allowed us to overtake it, and a second shot sees the train rounding the bend at Wolverton, heading towards its next passenger pickup at Northampton.

A few hours later, a Belmond Surrey Hills, travelling from London Victoria to Chertsey via Richmond, and returning via Woking, Shalford and Redhill, was lead by 35028 Clan Line. Following some stills at the starting point, Clan Line is firstly seen attracting the crowds at Addlestone. This trip, despite irecently moving the water stop to Chertsey, makes an additional stop at Shalford on Saturdays, which allowed us to overtake the train for a shot in the Surrey Hills. Arriving just minutes before her passing, Clan Line is captured digging into the climb of Gomshall Bank at Shere Heath, with little assistance from the Class 67 at the rear.
Following the addition of the new bridge at this location, the foot crossing has now been fenced off and closed, making that spot unusable. Its unknown whether shots will be possible there in the future if the crossing is completely removed.

2 shots each of 2 locomotives, made for another grand day out.
