Adrian College sophomore quarterback Jack Wurzer had a record-setting day as he threw for 403 yards in the Bulldogs’ 34-31 comeback victory over visiting Alma. Wurzer was named the MIAA offensive player of the week in football by the league office on Monday. It’s his first weekly honor accorded by the MIAA.

That figure eclipses Mike McGee’s school single-game mark of 386 passing yards set at Kalamazoo College on Oct. 3, 2009. Wurzer finished by completing 24 of 32 passes to seven different receivers and four touchdowns. Wurzer’s 24 completions tie a career best and are the fifth-highest total in school history. He also scored on a 1-yard TD rush.

Wurzer called the signals on the field to help Adrian overcome three deficits of 10-7, 17-14 and 24-20. He engineered what proved to be the game-winning drive with 12 minutes and 46 seconds remaining in the fourth quarter, ending on a Henry Wilson 61-yard TD pass from Wurzer that covered 75 yards on four plays.

The Bulldogs expanded on that 27-24 advantage by also scoring on their next possession–a 30-yard TD strike from Wurzer to Donald Scott–that consumed 7:18 of clock time, 80 yards and 11 plays for a 34-24 bulge.

Adrian took a 7-0 lead after an impressive drive of 83 yards in 16 plays over a span of 8:13. On the season, the architecture major leads the MIAA with a 264.3 passing yards average. He also is first in completions (117) and attempts (197) for 59.4 percent (4th) with eight touchdowns (3rd).
