Lovie Smith was finally fired after posting just a 17-39 record with no winning seasons and just one bowl appearances.
Now Bret Bielema steps in as the new head coach in Champaign, but don’t expect any major changes in 2021. The Fighting Illini return 15 starters from last years squad that went 2-6. The offense returns eight, including QB Brandon Peters, RB Chase Brown, and four offensive linemen. They will be tasked with improving drastically after averaging just 20.1 PPG (11th nationally) and just 152.9 PYPG (last in the Big Ten, 114th nationally). The defense returns seven and it wasn’t much better than the offense. Illinois allowed 34.9 PPG and ranked last in the Big Ten allowing 230.1 RYPG. Those numbers could improve though as most of their leaders return including leading tackler Jake Hansen, sack leader Owen Carney Jr., and Devon Witherspoon who tied for the team high in interceptions in 2020. Illinois hasn’t had a winning season in ten years. With a difficult schedule and a coaching change, that won’t change in 2021. The goal for Bielema is to lay the foundation and start rebuilding in Champaign and even with a poor record in year one thats exactly what he is going to do.
