California looked like a true North contender in 2020, but the Golden Bears went just 1-3. The lone win, though, came against Oregon in the season finale which might give this team a little momentum heading into 2021. Justin Wilcox is entering his fifth year in Berkeley with a 21-21 overall record. The one thing that has consistently hindered this team has been the offense. That will not be the case this season. California returns eight starters on offense and they have the most experienced QB in the PAC-12 in Chase Garbers. If he can stay healthy, Cal’s offense will improve drastically after ranking last in the conference in PYPG (192.8) and total offense (319.5 YPG). RB Christopher Brown Jr. returns for one more year after injuries rattled him last year and the Golden Bears also return four offensive linemen and four of their top five pass catchers. Needless to say, this will be the best offense of the Wilcox era. The defense is always a strength and that will be no exception this year. Cal ranked 23rd nationally against the pass in 2020 allowing just 197.8 PYPG. The secondary is once again loaded with Elijah Hicks and Daniel Scott leading the way. Cameron Goode returns at LB after posting three sacks in 2020. The only area Cal must improve is in stopping the run after they allowed 169.2 RYPG. The schedule is not an easy one with a trap game against Nevada in the opener and road games at TCU, Washington, Oregon, Stanford, and UCLA. But this team has the talent to make some noise in the North, drastically shake up the standings, and will once again be going bowling under Wilcox.
