Samford and Campbell combined for 30 hits and seven home runs in an NCAA Starkville Regional elimination game Saturday, with the Camels emerging with a 16-13 victory at Dudy Noble Field. The Bulldogs (35-24) went two-and-out in their first regional appearance since 2018. Samford lost to host Mississippi State 8-4 on Friday. On Saturday, the Bulldogs had the bases loaded with no outs in the ninth with a chance to tie. Samford’s Sonny DiChiara went 3-for-5 with two home runs and three driven in. The slugging first baseman from Hoover finished the year with 18 homers, giving him 41 for his career. Will David was 2-for-4 with a triple and two runs scored, while McManus was 3-for-5. Taylor Garris also hit a three-run homer for the Bulldogs, adding a double and a bases-loaded walk to finish 2-for-3 with three runs scored and four driven in. Samford finished with 15 hits and drew eight walks against six Campbell pitchers. Bryce Arnold, Zach Neto, Spencer Packard and Grant Harris all homered for Campbell, while Matthew Christian had two doubles and four runs scored. Harris and Arnold both drove in three runs for the Camels. Samford starter Zach Hester (2-4) took the loss, allowing five runs in 2/3 of an inning. Six Samford pitchers allowed 15 hits, walked four and hit three batters. Campbell reliever Logan Heintzman (7-1) got the win despite allowing five runs (four earned) in three innings. Westlake’s save was his fourth of the season. Campbell advances to meet the loser of Saturday’s late game between Mississippi State and VCU in another elimination game at 2 p.m. Sunday.
